Tengo 29 años, soy de Desamparados, San José, pero desde hace unos años vivo en Puerto Viejo, en el Caribe sur de Costa Rica, y sinceramente siento que aquí fue donde realmente encontré mi lugar.
I'm 29 years old. I'm from Desamparados, San José, but for the past few years I've been living in Puerto Viejo, on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast, and honestly, I feel like this is where I truly found my place.

Trabajo en administración hotelera y me gusta muchísimo porque ningún día se siente igual al otro.
I work in hotel management, and I love it because no two days ever feel the same.

Hay turistas de todo lado, siempre pasan cosas nuevas y el ambiente aquí es mucho más relajado que en San José.
There are tourists from everywhere, something new is always happening, and the atmosphere here is much more relaxed than in San José.

Yo nunca me vi trabajando en oficina con saco y presa todos los días.
I could never picture myself working in an office, wearing a suit and sitting in traffic every day.

Definitivamente esa vida no era para mí.
That lifestyle definitely wasn't for me.

Cuando me vine al Caribe pensé que iba a ser algo temporal, pero ya llevo dos años aquí y ahora no me imagino regresando a vivir a la capital.
When I moved to the Caribbean, I thought it would only be temporary, but I've been here for two years now, and I can't imagine moving back to the capital.

Aquí la vida tiene otro ritmo.
Life moves at a different pace here.

La gente anda más tranquila, uno vive más cerca de la naturaleza y el mar termina cambiándole la mentalidad a cualquiera.
People are more relaxed, you live much closer to nature, and the ocean ends up changing anyone's outlook on life.

Todavía me acuerdo que al principio el clima me costó muchísimo.
I still remember how difficult it was to adjust to the climate at first.

En invierno aquí TODO se humedece.
During the rainy season, EVERYTHING gets damp here.

Yo alquilo un estudio pequeño y bonito, pero mantenerlo limpio y seco durante la época lluviosa es una lucha constante.
I rent a small, cozy studio apartment, but keeping it clean and dry during the rainy season is a constant struggle.

Siempre hay arena, humedad o ropa que nunca termina de secarse completamente.
There's always sand, moisture, or clothes that never seem to dry completely.

Ya me acostumbré un poco, pero igual a veces me desespero.
I've gotten used to it a little, but it still gets frustrating sometimes.

Por dicha me llevo demasiado bien con mis compañeros de trabajo.
Thankfully, I get along really well with my coworkers.

Honestamente ya ni los veo como compañeros, son mis amigos.
Honestly, I don't even think of them as coworkers anymore—they're my friends.

Pasamos muchísimo tiempo juntos porque en turismo los horarios son raros, entonces terminamos saliendo después del trabajo, yendo a la playa o haciendo cenas improvisadas entre todos.
We spend a lot of time together because tourism has unusual work schedules, so we often end up going out after work, heading to the beach, or putting together spontaneous dinners.

Después de vivir dos años aquí por fin me animé a aprender surf.
After living here for two years, I finally decided to learn how to surf.

Me daba miedo honestamente porque el mar del Caribe a veces se pone fuerte y yo no crecí surfeando ni nada así.
Honestly, I was scared because the Caribbean can get pretty rough sometimes, and I didn't grow up surfing or anything like that.

Pero poco a poco le he agarrado el gusto.
But little by little I've really started to enjoy it.

Todavía no soy buenísima, pero ya por lo menos logro agarrar algunas olas y no pasar revolcada cada cinco minutos.
I'm still not great at it, but at least now I can catch a few waves and avoid getting tossed around every five minutes.

La verdad todavía no sé si algún día quiero casarme o tener hijos.
Honestly, I still don't know whether I want to get married or have children someday.

A veces pienso que sí sería bonito encontrar una pareja estable, pero otras veces me gusta demasiado la libertad que tengo ahorita.
Sometimes I think it would be nice to find a long-term partner, but other times I really love the freedom I have right now.

Me gusta poder decidir sola, moverme, viajar y construir mi vida a mi manera sin sentir presión.
I like being able to make my own decisions, move around, travel, and build my life my own way without feeling pressured.

Mis papás todavía viven en Desamparados y siempre me preguntan cuándo voy a volver “a la civilización”, como dicen ellos.
My parents still live in Desamparados, and they always ask me when I'm going to return "to civilization," as they like to say.

Pero cada vez que regreso a San José un fin de semana, confirmo más que ya no es mi lugar.
But every time I go back to San José for a weekend, I'm even more convinced that it isn't my place anymore.

Demasiado ruido, demasiada presa y demasiada gente estresada.
Too much noise, too much traffic, and too many stressed-out people.

Aquí en Puerto Viejo siento que respiro diferente.
Here in Puerto Viejo, I feel like I breathe differently.

Hay días donde salgo del trabajo cansadísima, camino cinco minutos y ya estoy viendo el mar.
Some days I leave work completely exhausted, walk for five minutes, and I'm already looking at the ocean.

Y honestamente, eso vale muchísimo para mí.
And honestly, that means the world to me.
